There seem to be some "questioning voices" emerging within the Church about whether that cross/jewelry really is a point of principle for Christian living. I further wonder whether a NSM priest or Priest in secular employment would regard it as a matter of religious freedom to wear a dog-collar to work at BA? Would the Church be defending that right?
There does also seem to a certain strand within the Church which regards it as something "desirable" to be " persecuted" - I think the whole university CU debate is a wonderful turnaround in principle on UCCF's part - in my time at University and as Chair of the Christian Societies they regarded it as essential and a matter of principle that they were NOT affiliated to something as immoral as the Students Union. So rather than supporting them I think some of the Bishops should asking UCCF what they are up to!
Some helpful further thoughts here from ekklesia on the cross debate
Absolutely. I find the whole tendency to label such trivialities persectuion very worrying and also somewhat offensive. There is real persecution against people of numerous faith across the world and yet it is on the matter of a check-in clerk's right to wear a cross that Rowan Williams feels impelled to criticise.
