Preparing for a workshop on preaching to contemporary congregations with two other contributers ( who are much more experienced preachers) and we discovered that none of us had decided to two the same two essential books on preaching. My two are Donald Coggans " New Day fo Preaching - the Sacrament of the Word" and Charlie Browns " The Ministry of the Word". I particularly value Charlie's emphasis on preaching being a personal art-form, rather than placing the emphasis on teaching and being a teacher which so many other books on sermons do.
This is clearly my morning for being frustrated by inability to remember contexts in which I've heard particular words of wisdom...Worse still, in this case I cant' actually remember the words; but someone, somewhere, once quoted some mindblowingly helpful words of Charlie Brown's to me, which I vowed never to forget.
Oh dear, dear, dear...Perhaps I'd better see if the book is on Amazon, just in case they were included therein. Anyway, my preaching needs all the help it can get!
